Warning: Read Your Business Insurance Policy

The policy is a legal document issued by the insurance carrier for your business. We help you focus on key areas:

  • Exclusions--what's not covered!
  • Definitions--your definition and carriers definition is different.
  • Claims--what scenarios are going to destroy your business?
  • Coverages--what should be on your policy?

Insurance companies want agents to focus only on sales. Our philosophy is to focus on the policy first, then the value.

Image of man sorting through business insurance policy

My agent said "Call me if I had any questions?"

Smiley face

Business insurance policies are legal documents consisting of hundreds of terms, conditions, and definitions. Most people never read through the policy they just received in the mail.

Here's our list of things you should know:

  • Make sure your business is properly classified by the agent. What does your company do? Otherwise, it could spell disaster.
  • Read before you sign any document.
  • Every policy has exclusions or what is not covered. Think through the types of claims likely to land your business in court. Will the insurance cover it?
  • Every policy has definitions. These definitions change the context of the policy itself.
  • The actions of your employees are covered by your business liability insurance. This is good and bad.
  • Workplace Injuries or discrimination are not covered under a genera liability policy. You need workers compensation and employment practice liability insurance.
  • Those updates (endorsements) in the mail from your insurance carrier means they are changing the policy. What you bought is no longer the same.
  • Read your lease with your landlord. They typically have specific requirements.
  • Be careful when it comes to contracts, advertising/publishing, hiring/firing, and negligence.
  • If you were told something is covered--get it in writing. If you have a claim--keep accurate documentation.
